Abbreviations and Stitch guide

Hi and Welcome to the « Summer Freshness » Shawl CAL !

Here I grouped the abbreviations used and a stitch guide.

You will be able to open this page in a new window and so, navigate easily between the different parts of the pattern and this page.

  • Abbreviations used (US Terms):

St(-s): stitch(-es)
ch: chain
sc: single crochet
dc: double crochet
tr: treble
If you need help, you can read this => “Apprendre le crochet : les bases
FPdc: front post double crochet
BPdc: back post double crochet
If you need help, you can read this => “Apprendre le crochet : Les mailles en relief
[ …] : make the instructions between squared brackets in one same stitch or location.
ch-  ch previously made, e.g. ch-1.
ch-sp: chain space e.g. ch2-sp
(…) x 4: repeat the instructions between round brackets the number of time indicated
(6): number of stitches at the end of a row.
RS/WS: right side/wrong side

  • Stitches guide:

Here I list the stitches that I have abbreviated in the instructions to shorten the text and I detail their explanations.

Ch3-2dc: indicated at the start of the row, this means doing ch 3 then 2 dc at the base of ch-3. It is the same as doing [3dc] and count for 3 dc in the total stitches.

Ch3-Xdc: indicated at the start of the row, this means doing ch 3 then X dc at the base of ch-3. It is the same as doing [1+X dc] and count for 1+X dc in the total stitches.

Ch1-2sc: indicated at the start of the row, this means doing ch 1 then 2 sc at the base of ch-1. It is the same as doing [3sc] and count for 3 sc in the total stitches.

V : called this way because of its look, this st is made of [dc 2, ch 2, dc 2] in one st or ch-sp.

V2 : this st is made of [tr 2, ch 2, tr 2] in one st or ch-sp.

Shell: make 5-dc in one st or ch-sp.

Fan1: make [ (dc 1, ch 1) x2, dc 1] in the indicated ch-2 sp.

FanA: make [ (dc 1, ch 1) x4, dc 1] on the shell.

FanA2: make [ (dc 1, ch 2) x 4, dc 1] on FanA.

FanB: make 7-dc in ch-5 sp.

  • Notes:

    • I recommend you to place a marker in the center st and to move it from row to row as you go.
    • To achieve this work, you must know the basic sts but also the FPdc and BPdc.
    • This work is crocheted in rows with back and forth, so you will turn your work at each end of row. I did not note “turn” at the end of each row to shorten the text.
    • Gauge: After crocheting rows 1 to 4, the piece is 5 cm/2in high (in the center) and about 10 cm/4in wide (along the base).
