CAL Summer Freshness Shawl – General information

To help you visualize the pattern, written instructions and charts will guide you through the different parts.

If you are a hooker who knows the basics and are looking for something exciting to do, this pattern ticks all the boxes.

From June 24, 2020, I organize a CAL for this fabulous model. Each week you will get a new part, and we will crochet together until we get the shawl. Isn’t that a great way to spend time right now?

How did the adventure begin?

This model is my first shawl to be released.

Over my crochet years, I have made a lot of shawls, scarves, snoods, etc., in many different shapes and with other yarns. Then a few years ago, I discovered the Scheepjes brand and its Whirl cake. From that moment, I always looked for models to do with this thread that I love so much.

I had the opportunity to make a few models, even a cardigan. But it’s also true that I like making things that are quick to make. Spending 3 months on a make is not my thing. I love this thread so much that at the beginning of February 2020, I challenged myself to create my pattern and thus have fun with Scheepjes Whirl.

It took me four months with many tests, writing, and charts, but I’m happy that everything is now finished and ready.

It is to celebrate this pattern that I host a CAL for anyone who wishes to join.

When does the CAL start?

The CAL began on June 24, 2020. It will last five weeks, with the last part of the pattern being published on July 22. I will do the CAL with you in the Mignon Crochet: Le Groupe group on Facebook, so join us if you are not yet a member!

A new part will be published every Wednesday, from June 24, 2020, at noon (French time).

  • June 24: 1st part
  • July 1: 2nd part
  • July 8: 3rd part
  • July 15: 4th part
  • July 22: 5th part (the last)

If you can’t keep up, don’t worry. The pattern will remain available indefinitely on my blog, and I remain open to answering your questions.

What is the level?

If you are a beginner and know how to make chains, single crochet, and double crochet, then you will be able to succeed.

You also have to know how to make Front/Back Post double crochet, but when you already know how to make the double crochet stitch, there is no great difficulty for them. You can look at the article dedicated to the need: “Les mailles en relief.”

I wrote the instructions, keeping in mind to keep things simple without overloading the text. I made charts to make it easier for you to see the patterns. Also, when stitch groups were repeated, I gave them a name to simplify and wrote the explanations and a small chart to show what it looked like.

Which yarn to use?

I created this pattern for Scheepjes Whirl; it is a thread made from a mixture of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic, which allows you to create clothing and accessories that are light, breathable, and remarkable!

Each cake contains 1000 meters, allowing you to make the shawl with only one cake.

Here are some examples of colors:

You can completely use another yarn; the important thing is to take an equivalent to keep the dimensions of the shawl.

To help you compare and take the right amount of yarn, know that Scheepjes Whirl is a ball of 215-225gr / 1000 meters or for 100gr about 455m.

Which hook to use?

It would be best if you had a 3.50mm hook or the one required to meet the gauge. The gauge will be explained in the first part. (June 24)

What is the size of the shawl?

After blocking*, the shawl measures 180cm x 82cm – about 70in x 32in.

* Blocking consists of:

  • cold wash the item,
  • remove excess water (by wringing it in a terry towel, for example),
  • spread your work on a flat surface,
  • pin the piece giving it its shape (in this case, in a triangle),
  • let it dry.

After drying, the product retains its shape. It is advisable to repeat the operation after each wash.
